the monitor
The paradigm for the computer up until today has always been workspace.
The desktop, folders, and files are part of the way we understand the
organization of the computer. Although these objects work in a more
intelligent manner than ordinary desktops, folders, and files, these
objects reinforce the idea that computers are static and inanimate.
These ideas are reassuring, we feel that we have control over these
objects. But these objects hide a vast amount of information that is
contantly being updated and changed. We often don't see what goes on
behind the operating system. It is possible that no matter how intelligent computers become we will not understand them as dynamic systems until we create a model that visualizes that dynamic system. That is what I plan to do. I am not adding any more intelligence to the computer, simply visualizing the intelligence that is already there. I plan to do this by retrieving information from the OS (hard drive access, memory usage, cd access, CPU usage, battery level, network communication, etc) and visualize it as a dynamic form.
